Optimum Online - Statistics and Technology
By Nick Reese
Optimum Online is an internet service provider that services several areas in the state of New York, including New York City, Brooklyn, Westchester, the Bronx, and several other areas that include parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Optimum Online is a subsidiary of Cablevision.
Optimum Online offers several different service packages to fit the needs of a wide variety of customers. To start off, we will take a look at a few of the services that Optimum Online provides.
First, their standard offering is a nice package for people who want to have a good high speed connection to the Internet Optimum Online pipeline. The basic package gives the customer access to a 15 Mbit/s downstream speed and a formidable 2 Mbit/s upstream internet connection speed. As of June of 2006, a subscription to their basic package will run a customer from $44 to $49 per month. With this service, the customer will generally be set up with a DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem.
The next package that Optimum Online offers their customers is called their Boost package. The Boost package takes the basic package a step further by increasing the amount of bandwidth that the customer has access to...up to a 30 Mbit/s download speed and a 5 Mbit/s upstream. However, with great speed comes a small price increase. In order to get the Optimum Online Boost package, you will be paying an additional $14.95 per month. Customers who use the Optimum Voice package will be paying an additional $9.95 per month. In some cases, reports have come in that some customers are achieving speeds of higher than 30 Mbit/s.
The third package we will be looking at today is Optimum Online's Ultra package. This package was revealed to the public in May of 2009, and was heralded as a great package with a huge pipe. The Ultra package puts the user in a good position, bringing them some massive bandwidth. How big? Optimum Online has given customers bandwidth limits of up to 101 Mbit/s coming down, and a 15 Mbit/s upload speed. In order to get this package, a customer can expect to pay $99.95 per month, or $50 per month for current subscribers to the Optimum Boost with Optimum Voice packages. From the start of this package, this was the biggest bandwidth allowance for residential and small business customers in the U.S. In order to ride this big pipeline, a customer will be given a new DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem.
For those customers of Optimum Online who need it, they offer static IP addresses for your internet access plan. This additional service comes with a price tag that reads $24.95 per month and provides support for SMTP, HTTP, and other common proxy ports, but they are automatically blocked. To enable them, just log into the web interface and make the changes.
One other perk that Optimum Online gives to their customers (other than exceptionally large packages) is free wireless internet access (WiFi). Optimum Online has a network of WiFi access points which can be found in many public areas, such as shopping centers, train stations, ballparks, business districts, and school neighborhoods.
